Find The Killer and my toxic relationship with Unity
Finishing Find The Killer (if I can still finish it) has been horrible.
I rarely write something like this, but it needed to be said. That this game is published here is almost a miracle, given that I don't even have access to the project anymore.
To understand what I'm saying let me tell you something: I exported my project and without changing anything, I tried to export it again and I can't. A bug that I cannot fix either by downloading Grandle myself and linking it to Unity, or by using templates or Grandle, or in any other way. I'm useless? Maybe, but it doesn't matter, I already published my game. And works.
But it doesn't always work, every 10 devices (maybe more), there is one that tries to Find The Killer and the screen goes black. And I don't know why, the game has the same logic on all Android devices, and apparently on some it just doesn't work well. Maybe it is related to the camera change and the update, I don't know, because since it doesn't happen on my devices I can't even test it. Because it works well for me, and although it may be satisfactory for me, it will not be satisfactory for other people who try it. And that's not right .
This game has been a prison, and at the same time I have had a great time doing it, it has been something very well measured, at the level of what I could do, with my ability to do something complete by myself, and I am happy about this, with its pros and cons. Like many developers who start doing something too big, I've had to learn that less is more. I had to learn what it means to be a solo indie developer. I've learned to know myself and how far I can go, and for now: it's worth it.
I have given up a lot of aspects that appear in the demo of my game and that I felt very comfortable with: day/night cycles, a credits event where all the assassins you have captured entering prison appear, some shaders with lines Comic style. filling, etc. And yet, now I like it more, because even if it doesn't have lights, it doesn't have shadows, or it doesn't have lines, it looks better!
This game has been a learning process to let go, to leave behind endless projects, to see how many times it is worth starting from scratch with a new idea and finishing it before burning out on an idea. Because yes, this idea continues to fascinate me, I haven't had time to get bored, and if one day I discover how to export my project again, I will gladly make new maps haha.
Finally, for anyone who wants to try it, thanks for reading this post :)
